The North American RepublicF-84Thunderbolt jet fighter-bomber originated fromthe design requirements of the U.S. Air Force's next-generation daytime fighter in1944. It first flew in1946 , andthe F-84 family began production and servicethe followingyear. By1953, a total of4,457aircraft ofsixdifferent variants had been produced.

The F-84Ewasthe first operational variant ofthe F-84 family,enteringservice in1949.However, due to performance deficiencies, the U.S. Air Forcetransferred it to second-line reserves in1956. The National Guard took over and used it until1959.
